Find Family Fun This Winter

Summer may be over, but the winter holiday season is another perfect opportunity for a family getaway enjoyed by all.

According to a recent survey sponsored by Yahoo! Travel and National Geographic Traveler, over 92 percent of respondents plan to take at least one vacation with family in the upcoming year.

Many families seek a one-of-a-kind experience, but most importantly a vacation that has something for everyone.

Picture yourself this holiday season traveling past snowcapped mountains amidst the "Land of a Million Christmas Trees" with your entire family at your side.

One of the world's unique travel experiences, crossing the Canadian Rockies by train, has fast become a family favorite.

The "Winter Rail Journey," offered by Rocky Mountaineer Railtours in December, is a two-day trip between Vancouver and Kamloops, British Columbia, to the world-class ski resort town of Banff in the majestic Canadian Rockies. The holiday ride includes musical entertainment, children's programs and even a visit from Santa Claus, who joins the fun when the train meets his sleigh mid-route.

Specialty coaches onboard the Rocky Mountaineer allow the entire family to embrace the holiday spirit. One coach features a children's entertainer who leads the group in song, games and holiday crafts. For adults, a second coach features live jazz music and a bar serving delicious winter beverages like mulled wine and eggnog. Onboard attendants also provide commentary on the history, geography and culture of the region.

Guests may choose to travel in the spacious RedLeaf coach or the bi-level, glass-domed GoldLeaf coach featuring panoramic views from the upper level. Rocky Mountaineer guests opting for the train's GoldLeaf service can dine on freshly prepared Western Canadian seasonal dishes served in a private dining room while enjoying the views of the sparkling winter scenery.

For a longer holiday trip, travelers can extend their two-day rail experience by selecting one of nine winter vacation packages ranging from four to 10 days. For instance, the popular "Winter Wonderland" package allows guests to explore Vancouver and enjoy a two-night stay in Banff with visits to Banff and Yoho National Parks. Of course, a visit to this breathtaking "outdoor playground" is not complete without traditional Canadian winter activities like sleigh rides, snowshoeing, dog sledding and ice walks.
